Don’t Call Us Dead- Reaction

Poetry and I have never gotten along. I have yet to acquire a taste for it. After being assigned to read Danez Smith’s “Don’t Call us Dead”, I was yawning before I even opened it. I expected it to be a rather boring collection of poetry. However, I was in for an pleasant surprise.

Smith’s tone can be heard throughout every single poem. It’s different, it varies. I can almost hear him reading these out loud! So instead of wondering how he’d sound like reading them, I actually listened to the poems being read out loud.

I loved it so much! Smith does a wonderful job taking the “boring” stereotype of poetry that I have built up in my head. He turns his sorrow, anger, and resentment into an almost melody and I wish every poem had a video to go along with it. I think this could really help me to connect better.

I appreciate his raw honesty. He doesn’t hold back at all! He writes the way he thinks, which I think is great! You don’t get a lot of genuineness from people nowadays. Overall, I’d say reading this was an enjoyable experience that I did not expect!

Introducing Zachery Ali-Yallah

Zachery Ali-Yallah

Early Life

Hello my name is Zachery Ali-Yallah. I was born in DeKalb county Georgia. My parents lived in Saudi Arabia at the time of my birth so my mom and I travelled to Saudi Arabia soon after birth to join my dad. We lived in Saudi Arabia for about 2 years before returning to Covington, Georgia. I attended Cousins Middle School where I played basketball. I graduated high school in 2018 from Salem High School. I now attend Georgia State University, Perimeter campus.  I am looking to transfer after I finish my 2 years at this school. I am majoring in journalism here at Georgia State Perimeter. My goal is to graduate from a four year college in 2022 and either join the Air Force or continue to graduate school.

Family

My father is from Ghana, West Africa. Although I have never visited Ghana, I look forward to going there one day. My mother is from Decatur, Georgia hence our attachment to Georgia. My father has a Ph.D. in Computer Science so I want to be like him one day although I do not necessarily like computers beyond just using them for basic things like surfing the web or playing games. I am from a very educated family. My older sister is in Law School. My sister who comes after me is taking college classes in 11th grade. My mom has a nursing degree. I have a lot to look up to education wise.

Personal interest

In my spare time I am usually either playing basketball or watching basketball. I have been playing basketball since elementary school so it is something I’ve always loved to do. In my freshman year of high school, I played varsity basketball but sadly broke my ankle which kept me out for the rest of the season. When I returned in my second year I broke my pinky finger. I was never able to fully recover and get back to full strength. I still enjoy playing basketball even after all the injuries I had. My favorite player to watch in the NBA is LeBron James and whatever team he is on. I support whatever team he is on because I like the player and not the team necessarily. If I am not playing basketball or watching it, then I am usually at my part-time job or hanging with my family. ffffffffff

About me

My name is Jelysa Edwards and I am Jamaican. Both my parents are from Jamaican and we try to visit every year. I like to visit and help my family anytime we get an opportunity to go. Not only do i like to go there to see my family but the food there is more than delicious.

I’ve played tennis since the 7th grade and that is my favorite sport. I’ve played soccer, basketball, and volleyball but tennis is my favorite so that’s what I kept doing. I played tennis all of high school and been in 3 championship games. I decided not to play in college to focus more on my goals i wasn’t really interested in keeping up with it.

My major is psychology. I plan on using my psychology degree to obtain a marketing/ advertising job. I’m really interested with study human behavior and development which could help me in sales by understanding how the human brain works in order to help grow business. If my major were to change i would major in a marketing degree and minor in psychology.

The Other Jalen

I know it may sound pretentious of me, but the one thing I’d like to point out is that my name has no Y’s, or I’s, or apostrophes in it. My name is simply spelled Jalen, like the famous basketball player, nothing fancy or unique. Other than that, I’m not normally serious but I do look like I am lost most of the time which is quite the contrary. Some of my friends (and former teachers) have considered me to be one of the laziest-smartest people you could probably meet but I honestly think that is 75% of my generation.

I hail from the Sunshine State, or what is better known as Florida. I wasn’t originally born in Florida, New York gets to hold that title, but I’ve lived in Tampa, Florida almost all of my life. Lucky me, I got to move to this wonderful city called Atlanta about three years ago to attend GSU. My current major is Kinesiology and Health with a focus in Exercise Science, before that, I was a Physics major, and before that, I was kind of a Criminal Justice major but that’s a story for another time. But I think the deciding factor on my current major was that I actually like science and sports, making this the best option for me, that and I DID NOT want to take 4 different Calculus classes on top of my science classes. My end goal for my major is to develop a fitness center that allows the youth to try sports that they normally don’t have access to.

I have a lot of different interest mainly because I’m always trying to learn something new. It has gotten to point were people constantly ask me why I know so much about a topic. I could sit down and have a conversation with you about almost over 100 different things. It could be about cars, laws, food, sports, fashion, even films and other styles of art. But my interest I’m best known for at the moment are cooking, cars and games. If you wanted to learn how to properly cut through a Yellow-Fin Tuna, I can do that, if you want to know the difference between a 13B Rotary Engine and an EJ207 Boxer Engine, I got you, and if you wanted to know how esports became a multi-million dollar concept and how to invest into them, we could talk about that too. You could safely assume that, most people would consider me a walking encyclopedia or something of the sort, but as I like to say, it would be a waste of information to not learn something new everyday in this Digital Age.

E R Y K A

Eryka (Erica) is my name! Believe it or not, people mispronounce my name allll the time! I was born on January 21, 1998. I’m 21 years old and this is my sophomore year in college. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I moved to Decatur when I was 11 years old. I graduated from Southwest Dekalb in May 2016. I am the oldest of 4 children and the first person in my immediate family to go to college.

I don’t really have a favorite color; I love them all! My favorite type of food is SEAFOOD. I don’t really go out much because I don’t really care to. I LOOOOOVEEEEE MUSIC!! No, I don’t sing, dance, nor do I play an instrument. Music is just reallyyy relaxing. My major right now is nursing…we’ll see how this goes.

My biggest fear is not being able to reach every goal I’ve set for myself. I work 5 days a week and I go to school 4 days a week. Some say I’m “overworking” myself, however, I’m just tryna put me and my family in a better position in life. I wanna buy my momma a house and a brand new car. I need to be able to buy all my younger siblings a nice car so therefore, I work my ass off!

About Jalen Blog

Greetings to all, I present myself, Jalen Corley, to English 1102. I humbly introduce myself. Currently, I am a sophomore at Georgia State University and plan on transferring to the down town location after my semester here is complete. Here at Georgia State, I am taking the path to ensure I get my bachelors in the study of Arta and Design. I plan on taking actions with my study skills when I have completed my 4years with computer graphic designing.

I wasn’t always the artist you perceive me now as. When my mother was conceived with me in her stomach, she was a part of the most hectic military force, the marines. My mother was only in boot camp when I was just a bump in her stomach. Eventually I would be born on the 3rd day of November. Unfortunately, my mother could not finish her marine path due to the sudden birth of me which she was not prepared for.

Me, being only consciously aware of being in Atlanta my whole life, finds it weird that my birth certificate says the state of Maryland. But it is the truth, it’s jaw dropping for me whenever I look at my certificate. My mother was stationed in Bethesda, Maryland at the time. After 2 weeks of my birth, me and my mother moved to Virginia and stayed down there for about 4 months. When news got to my mom that my family was moving to Atlanta from New York, my mom quickly came down to accompany them and that’s where life in ATL started at only 1 years of age.

Currently, present day, my hobbies include sketching, painting, drawing, and making instrumental beats. As you can tell, art has always been a desire, since a little boy. I’ve been sketching before I could remember and it shifted towards asking beats around the 10th grade of high school. Making beats is a totally new adventure for me because it allows you to express yourself in 808’s, snares, and kicks. It feels truly amazing when I have friends put vocals over my beats and we’re making music from scratch. My hobbies and past experiences define the person I am today.

Success Story

I grew up in Lithonia, Ga, raised by my Great Grandparents. Growing up I was really into making jewelry, drawing, and writing plays and just writing period. Ive always had the passion of growing up and becoming a Lawyer and one day being able to write a book as well about my life. Ive always had a lot of ambition as a young one even when things got bad around a certain point of my life, I always had faith of some sort. I was always taught to keep some through any temptation.

I have two little sisters and an older brother. I also have a little sister on my daddy’s side but I don’t see much of her. My entire family (on my mother’s side) stays in Michigan. My daddy’s side stays in Ohio. Growing up, even though I was raised by my Great Grandparents, I’ve always been sort of a Daddy’s girl. Me and mother never got along and still don’t to this day. I just really plan to be the best mother to my child and give him/her everything I never got from my mother.

Speaking of my child, I am expecting one coming in August of this year! I am extremely excited about it and so is my boyfriend. I just so happened to find this out, on Christmas Day. Like I’ve already said, I plan to be the best mother i can be to my little one and give them everything they need in the world.

About Me

Hello I am sherlyn, I know that we didn’t have to identify ourselves i just wanted to. I am a simple person I dont require much to be happy all I want is to be is the best version of myself.  I was born in jacksonville florida and was raised between there and charlotte north carolina. I moved to georgia because i wanted to go to georgia state and i wanted to live somewhere other than where i was raised. I am so happy to be in atlanta i have family from here and the adjustment has been good compared to other places i had to move to.

I am the third of four children i have two older sisters and a younger brother. I am the only person in my immediate family that is multilingual. I can speak german, english (obviously), i can understand portuguese, and i know conversational korean. I want to help people so i have always wanted to be able to speak seven languages outside of the language i was born speaking. Personally i feel the best way to connect with people is to talk to them and hear their stories. Also i have a slight sailor mouth so not being understood by everyone is to my advantage sometimes.

Furthermore i find that with people i can be very polarizing, i am talkative and very opinionated. I find that my intolorance of ignorance can com off as cocky or even condescending i just happen to have a naturally caustic tone when i speak. I honestly love people im just really shy, if o could i would honestly be friends with the world.

HELLO!

Hello, my name is Cynthia, but I prefer Cyn. I was born and raised in a whole different world, that I live in now. I born and raised in a beautiful country, located in East Africa called Tanzania. At the age of four my mother left for America so she could create a better home for my sister and I and so we could get better education. After my mother left, my sister and I moved to my aunt’s house in a whole other region. We don’t have states in Tanzania, but we have something like that called regions, its like moving from Georgia to New York. I had no problem living with my aunt and uncle and their three kids. I was fun, like nothing ever changed. My aunt has two sons and a daughter and since my sister and my aunt’s daughter went to boarding school, I was around the boys often and I considered them to be my brothers. That’s probably why I am a Tomboy. I always dress comfortably, like a dude you will see me walking around campus with my crew necks and sweat pants on minding my business.

When my mom finally got the documents for me to come live in America, I was so excited. I had never been outside Tanzania nor anywhere around the continent of Africa. When I came here I was a little disappointed when everything looked the exact same. The only thing that was different were the roads and schools. If you met me, I would describe myself as, quiet, calm, respectful human being. The way I am today were because of how I was taught in boarding school back in Tanzania and my family. Everything was different when I started school here. The kids were mean to me because of my accent and since I was in boarding school, my hair was shaved and those mean middle school kids stared calling me a lesbian. After all the harshness I endured during my middle school days, I developed an introvert personality. I am not the type of person who will make the first move towards becoming your friend, or if we were in a group of friends, I definitely wouldn’t be the life of the group.

When I got to high school, I was in a whole different state. It meant meeting new people and starting all over. I started making friends and this also gave me the push to come out of my shy introvert shell. I am a little more open now, I am not afraid to let the whole world hear my accent. I try to make new friends and meeting different people and learning about their cultures, tasting different foods and learning different hobbies. My favorite hobby is playing video games. Ever since I was back in Tanzania my cousins would teach me how to play so that became my favorite thing besides Anime.
